Chapter Nine

Stephen let himself into his apartment and let out a heavy sigh when he realized he’d be sleeping alone tonight. He couldn’t blame Russ for feeling awkward around his friends, although they’d all agreed they liked the younger man and that he was good for Stephen. Stephen agreed, but he knew things were moving a little fast for Russ. The problem was, they weren’t moving as fast as Stephen wanted. It was a struggle to keep his mouth shut every time Russ wanted to spend the night at his own apartment, and Stephen loathed the nights he slept alone.

It wasn’t the sex, although there was no denying the perks of Russ’ tight ass and willingness to let Stephen fuck him into oblivion. Stephen tossed his keys in the entryway dresser drawer and slipped his phone into its cradle. He was tempted to call Russ but he knew he was probably asleep already.

Or, not sleeping because he missed Stephen. Hopefully. Stephen scrubbed a hand over his face as he walked into the bedroom. Fuck. He was twisting himself into knots over the younger man, and the problem was, Russ seemed unaffected. Well, maybe not unaffected but uninterested in things progressing any further.

Stephen fell asleep frustrated and wondering why the hell he put himself through dating younger men when it always played out the same way. He was ready for things to get serious long before they were, and he wound up heartbroken and alone after. Russ was the first in years he’d been willing to let in. The first he’d wanted to ask to move in.

He didn’t see Russ until lunchtime the next day, and he dragged him out to eat at a restaurant so he could touch him.

“I missed you last night,” Russ admitted when they were seated at the table with their food in front of them.

Stephen paused, fork halfway to his mouth. “Yeah?”

“Yeah.” Russ’ tone was grudging, and Stephen had to fight back a smile.

“I missed you too.” He took a bite of his salad and dove in before he could second-guess himself. “You know, there’s a way to fix that.”

“Fix what?” Russ paused, burger halfway to his mouth.

“Missing each other at night.”

Russ raised an eyebrow at him. “Oh?”

“Move in with me.” Stephen’s heart pounded a little too fast in his chest, and he set his fork down and stared at the man sitting across the table from him. Russ was dressed in the suit he’d bought him and one of Stephen’s ties he’d borrowed when he forgot to pack one. Not that Stephen cared; in fact, it turned him on that Russ kept and wore it. But his pleasure in claiming Russ was no secret.

Russ set his food down and wiped his fingers on his napkin, not meeting Stephen’s gaze. Shit, Stephen had fucked this up. He pasted a smile on his face and braced himself for the letdown.

“Stephen ...”

“Too soon?”

Russ sighed and finally looked at him. “It’s barely been over a month. That’s ... yeah, that’s fast.
